Custard apple has an extremely aromatic sweet-tart taste. The fruit is high in sugar, making it very sweet, while the flavor is more mild, having hints of strawberry and raspberry. The texture varies from hard when the fruit is unripe to a soft, mushy, custard-like texture when ripe (where it derives its name). On the tongue, the flesh feels a bit sandy.
Scientific Name: Annona Reticulata
Also Known As: Wild sweetsop, bullocks heart, sugar apple (not to be confused with annona squamosa)
When/ How to Eat: When ripe, the fruit is soft to the touch, when placed on a flat surface it should look like its "melting;" at this stage of ripeness, the stem and core can be pulled straight out and fruit pulled open. Eat the white flesh and spit out and save the seeds for planting.
Where it Grows: Custard apple is native to the West Indies and Central/South America and can be grown in USDA zones 10-11. We recommend soaking the seed for no more than 24 hours and then placing the seed into soil half an inch deep (half a finger). Expect a seedling between 2-6 weeks.
Please keep in mind the weight of each box varies from fruit to fruit and overall is dependent on the fruit's overall mass, size and shape.
