Papaya has a taste similar to cantaloupe melons with more of a pungent kick. The flavor has a musky, floral hint and the texture (when ripe) is buttery and melts in your mouth. The seeds have a slightly bitter, peppery taste.
Scientific Name: Carica Papaya
Also Known As: Papaw, pawpaw
When/ How to Eat: Papaya is ripe when the color changes from green to a light yellow. The fruit emits a musky floral scent and when pressed gently, is soft to the touch (not mushy). To eat the fruit simply cut it in half and scoop the flesh with a fruit. The seeds are edible however very high in fiber so please consume with caution.
Where it Grows: Papaya is native to the mesoamerican region (Mexico to South-Eastern Central America) and grows in zones 9b-11. To grow a papaya tree simply place the seeds in soil and wait 2-4 weeks for sproutlings.
