Given that Rambutan is within the same fruit family as Lychee, it comes to no surprise that they aren’t too different in flavor. Rambutan has a taste similar to grape with a hint of floral aromas. Rambutan is a bit creamier and sweeter than Lychee and have a more acidic note to their sweetness.
Scientific Name: Nephelium lappaceum
Also Known As: Hairy Lychee
When/ How to Eat: Rambutan is a bright red or pinkish color when ripe with flexible electric orange and green hairs. The outer shell can easily be peeled using your fingernail or you can use a knife to carefully cut around the middle.
Where it Grows: We recommend planting the seed found within the Rambutan flesh. Native to Southeast Asia, Rambutan trees thrive in USDA zones 10 through 11.
