Sapodilla is extremely sweet, with flavor hints of brown sugar, sweet potato and pear. The texture of the fruit is fig-like and feels sandy on the tongue. Sapodillas are often described as having a molasses-like taste.

Scientific Name: Manilkara zapota

Also Known As: Naseberry, chikoo, chiku, dilly, chicle, chicozapote, níspero, zapote, zapotillo

When/ How to Eat: Sapodilla is ripe when the fruit is very soft to the touch and the skin gets a bit wrinkly. If the fruit indents when you touch, then it is ripe and ready to eat. To eat the fruit simply cutting the fruit in half with a knife and scooping out the flesh with the spoon.

Where it Grows: Sapodilla is native to southern Mexico, Belize, and Northeastern Guatemala. The sapodilla tree goes in zones 4-11 in a pot or 8-11 in the ground. To plant the sapodilla seed simply soak the seed in water for max 24 hours then place seed in soil.
